Two films

Tuesday is a movie day in Vancouver, and we can watch most films at low prices. So yesterday I watched two films: 'Fahrenheit 9/11' by Michael Moore and 'The Notebook'.

Unfortunately I couldn't enjoy '911'. I know Moore is a director who stands against the power and this time he is trying to prevent Bush to be elected again. But I couldn't understand most episodes with my poor English skills. I felt lonliness while watching this movie because everyone in the theater was laughing at the episodes and I couldn't understand them. As the film itself is full of ugly faces of politicians and some cruel scenes, it is boring if you can't understand the episodes.

On the other hand, I enjoyed 'The Notebook'. This is a love story and I'm not interested in this field of movies very much. But I watched it because it was highly rated on a web site and the scene of the big wheel was taken near my apartment. The pictures were very beautiful and the stroy was easy to understand even to me. There were a lot of young girls in the theater and at the end of the movie, quite a few of them were sobbing. I was impressed more with them than the movie itself.

Pirate VCD

I got this video CD at a chinese shop in Richmond. It is a pirate edition of Japanese TV program. If you purchase the original edition in Japan, you have to pay ten times as much. They probably recorded the TV program in Japan, added chinese subtitles, made copies somewhere, and are selling them in Richmond. I found an evidence against that; they include some captions of a weather warning in Japan. This is of course an illeagal action, but I can't criticize them because I enjoy watching it. It is true that it helps us Japanese who are living abroad and want to see Japanese TV programs. Anyway Chinese are happy people because they can enjoy any TV programs and movies with Chinese subtitles at a very low price of pirated editions. And they are a little bit cheeky because this pirate video CD has a warning which says 'For private home use only. Any unauthorised copying, hiring, lending or public performance of this program is prohibited by law!'

50 FIRST DATES

This is one of my most favorite films I have seen these months. Today I bought this DVD which has just been on sale. "50 FIRST DATES" is a love comedy in Hawaii. A sailor falls in love with a woman, but she has one problem. She got a terrible traffic accident one year ago and lost her short term memory at that time. It means that she remembers all the things before the accident but forgets everything after the accident while she is sleeping in the night every day. So, she repeats and repeats the same day when the accident happened. It is her father's birthday and she goes shopping for a pineapple and takes lunch at the same restaurant every day. After about one year from the accident, the sailor meets with her and he tries to be good friends with her or more than that. His idea and effort to help her are very funny but nice and full of love. And the last scene is very happy especially for sailors.

Garfield the Movie

Though I had no information about Garfield, this character seems to be popular among North American people. When the movie started and the theme music was played, a girl sitting in front of me started dancing on her seat. She was really enjoying this movie. So I could enjoy myself too. Garfield is you know a funky, fat, lovely cartoon cat and in this movie he is a real CG character. He jumps around in the screen with real actors and animals. It is amazing. Though this movie is for kids, but I could totally enjoy it. I love Garfield.

Shrek 2

I went see Shrek 2 with BJ and Kuro-chan at Silvercity Riverport. Shrek2 is the latest film by PIXAR and the CG is incredibly real. The feel of substances such as characters' skin, wood, rock, and water are captured very well. And further more, each character is by far expressive and impressive. Even though I couldn't understand all the parts completely I totally enjoyed this film.
