Volkerwanderung takes place twice a year in Japan; lots of people go back to their hometown and come back to Tokyo in the middle of August and in this new year season every year. Different from the long vacation in Western countries, they come back soon after a few-day staying in their hometown. It's so busy and hectic. Most ways from Tokyo including land roads, airlines and trains get full in this season and the TV news reports customarily show how busy they are. Fortunately, I have no hometown except for Tokyo and I don't have to get into the crowdedness. I love this season because Tokyo becomes quieter and the sky gets clearer than usual. I always wish this peacefulness would last forever, but they all come back soon with the hustle and bustle.

Hello HL-san,
So the best time for one to visit Tokyo is mid-August (or are many businesses closed)? It has been many years since I last visited.
I gather that you no longer live in Vancouver, BC. Are you still flying?
