I found this protected vending machine in a rest area on the I5. I thought it was closed when I found it at first, but it was working and to my surprise, most of the vending machines in other rest areas were behind the iron bars in the same way. We have to put our hands into the grating to insert coins and get munchies from the tray. It looks too exaggerated but it might be necessary in this area. As far as I know, I have never seen such a protected vending machine in Japan or Canada. I have once heard that an ATM machine was stolen with the cash inside by a burglar equipped with a bulldozer in Japan, but who will take this machine with only some munchies and coins inside? I don't think it pays at all. Another reason I can guess is that these vending machines get out of order so often that they have to be protected from the customers who are angry and try to get back their coins by hitting them.
