My snail-mail box is always full of fryers. Most of them are spam but I don't hate them as much as email spam because they are limited in volume and not so dangerous as email; at least they don't carry virus. Anyway, I found a weird use of Kanji (Chinese characters) in a fryer from a jeweler's shop today. The character carved on the pendant originally means "happiness" and it might look a quite natural word to be carved on a pendant. However, it looks a little bit weird for us Japanese. It is pronounced "SU" which is just the same pronunciation as the first syllable of "SUSHI." Therefore, this Kanji is arbitrarily used as a substitute character of SUSHI in Japan. Actually you will always find this character printed on a tea cup served in a Japanese SUSHI restaurant. Do you like to wear a pendant which has a word related to food? Of course, this coincidence is limited only in Japan and Chinese people do like using this Kanji here and there. It can be said that this pendant has a Chinese taste.
