Steamed rice in Miso soup is called "cat food" in Japan. I don't know the reason for sure but it might be because cats in Japan had been fed with this menu item before canned cat food were invented. As you know, steamed rice "with" Miso soup is the staple diet for Japanese, but it changes into cats' food if rice were in soup. It is regarded as a bad manner to have rice soak into Miso soup in Japan. To tell the truth, I prefer this cat food because the rice soaked in Miso soup tastes good. Plus, if the rice or soup is cold, it can be eaten if the other one is hot. It's not only tasty but also reasonable. Though I have never had canned cat food, I think cats were much happier decades ago in Japan because they could enjoy this great menu item.
