My friend told me the other day about a great Chinese side dish - bottled bamboo shoot in chili oil. It goes well with steamed rice, not too spicy and a little bit salty. As you know, for us Japanese, steamed rice is the main diet. We can live just on rice and a little bit side dish makes it perfect. Of course, we have various kinds of side dishes which are good for steamed rice in Japan, but most of them are very expensive in Vancouver. I don't like to buy the same thing for the price three times or four times as high as the usual value in Japan. On the other hand, this Chinese food is quite reasonable as most other Chinese foods go. It costs only $1.99 per a bottle and it sometimes goes down to $1.50. I envy Chinese people who can get various native foods for a reasonable price and I'm thinking about trying other mysterious Chinese foods.
Yes, Steamed rice is indispensable for us Japanese. I think you find good side dish.
