It's still difficult for me to use coins after three years since I came to Canada for the first time. There are 6 kinds of coins used in Canada; 1cent, 5cents, 10cents, 25cents, 1dollar, and 2 dollars. 25cent coin is usually called "quarter" which I think makes it difficult and complicated for me to use coins. A quarter coin is slightly bigger than 5cent coin with the same color and thickness, so I often confuse them. At a cashier in a supermarket, if the total bill came up to $21.33 and I had one quarter, one 5cent coin, and three 1cent coins, I wouldn't be able to use those coins effectively and would use two 20 dollar bills instead, and my purse would swell with a lot of coins as the result. This may sound like an excuse, but the Japanese coin system is simpler and more efficient. We have 1yen, 5yen, 10yen, 50yen, 100yen, and 500yens, in which we can calculate separately below 1,000yen for coins and over 1,000yen for bills.
